Qualitative research

Qualitative research is asking closed questions that collects a little bit more information than quantitative research collects. qualitative research asks questions that you can answer a lot more than just 'yes' or 'no', and it gets into more detail and asks who ,what ,when and where. For example you could ask a question like ,what type of gaming console do you have?'. It is important to the media industry as they need to know why people liked something or didn't like something, If they didn't like something they could make it better next time to increase sales/views/hits.

The advantages of qualitative research:

  • Uses subjective information
  • Explores new areas of research
  • provides face to face indicators

The disadvantages of qualitative research:
  • relatively small numbers
  • very time consuming
Qualitative research is important to the social media industry because they want to know how many views and likes there YouTube video got and in the comments thy id out what people thought of the video did they like it and if not why and what could they do to make it better . For example if there was a new TV program out and the makers of the TV program wanted to know what every one thinks they could make a # on twitter so that when the tv program finished the producers would see wat everyone thought and if they didnt like it they what woul they want to see.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is all about receiving information about rating and numbers. you can ask questions like 'how much time?' or how many people?' for example you could ask how many people have got a playstation 4? or How much sleep do you get a day?. Some examples of quantitative information are:

  • TV ratings
  • Sales figures on video games
  • Listener figures of for the radio
  • Number of hits on a website
  • Readership figures of a newspaper/magazine
Social media is also included in quantitative research like Facebook and twitter for example twitter records how many re-tweets  you got on a tweet and how many people favorited that tweet Facebook records how many likes you got on a post.

Quantitative research is all about getting answers with numbers and about ratings . For example the image above shows that BBC Radio 1 had 10795,000 people listening to there radio station in the UK in June 2014 .

The advantages of quantitative research:
  • Answers questions such as 'how much?' and 'how many?'
  • Provides more of a decision making the conformation.
The disadvantages of quantitative research:
  • It is more expensive and takes more time
  • fixed questionnaire structure

secondary research

secondary research is about finding information that has already been collected and is a much quicker way of finding out information. It involves a summary or collection of  research other than primary research which is a type of research that takes time to collect.Secondary research can be found in books, the internet , magazines and newspapers.
Research companies such as the Broadcast Audience Research Board (BARB) collect information relating to television viewing figures. They sell this data o television broadcasters such as ITV,BBC and others,This means (BARB) are a primary research company.
  • It is a lot more faster than primary research.
  • Secondary research is always there on the internet or in a library.
  • It is a lot cheaper than primary research.
The disadvantages of  secondary research are:
  • The information you are getting may not be up to date.
  • The information may not be true.
  • It is less reliable.

primary research

Primary research is a type of research that you have found out on your own . Primary research can be collected by questionnaires, surveys, face to face interviews and focus groups.

Primary research takes a lot more time than secondary research
on the other hand you get the answers you need and the answers are the truth where as secondary research isn't always true.

A questionnaire will give you the specific data and all the information you need.

The advantages of primary research are:
  • surveys can be given to a large number of people
  • A large amount of information can be collected
  • A lot of questions can be asked to find the information you are looking for.
The disadvantages of  primary research are:
  • people may lie because they don't want to give there real opinion
  • people may lie about there answers because they might just want to hurry filling the survey up.
  • not enough respondents may give you enough data that you need.
  • Primary research is expensive to collect.

An example of primary research is when a new game is about to release the company get a small amount of people to play a small part of the game, at the end of the game the company asks the people what they thought of e game and what could be improved.
